Tumescent Liposuction Compared With Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction

By: Richard Bonn

The technique of liposuction has undergone many changes with the development in the field of medicine. As opposed to using big cannulas with suction pumps, liposuction today can be carried out using various other devices and methods. Today liposuction can be carried out using very small cannulas, using lasers, high frequency energy from ultrasound etc. With all the new techniques available, people have a wide choice of methods to choose from and need to select the liposuction technique with care after reviewing the benefits and demerits of each one of them. A common thing between each of the new techniques of liposuction is that each is better than the traditional method as they result in less blood loss.

Tumescent liposuction and ultrasound assisted liposuction are being used very popularly across the world. In the tumescent liposuction technique, a fluid is injected into the patient's body parts from which excess fats have to be removed. This fluid consists of lidocaine which is a local anesthesia and a medicine called epinephrine which is used to constrict the blood vessels. Tumescent liposuction is widely used because it results in less blood loss. The ultrasound assisted liposuction technique is used to remove excess fats from the patient's body by using high frequency energy from ultrasound. This energy disturbs the layers of fats and these fats can then be removed by suctioning them out.

Both techniques are similar in the sense that both result in less blood loss, less swelling and bruising. Also both the techniques require very small sized cannulas for removing fats from the body. The results of both tumescent liposuction and ultrasound assisted liposuction are permanent as the fat cells once removed do not grow back. Also in both cases a local anesthesia is used. Both liposuction techniques also require experienced surgeons to carry out the surgical process. The recovery time required for both the techniques is less. The price of both the techniques depends upon the amount of fats to be removed and the number of areas from which fats have to be removed.

The ultrasound assisted liposuction technique is also considered to be a better technique than tumescent liposuction because it causes lesser pain and helps in removing more fats and also requires the surgeon to do less work. On the other hand it has been found out that tumescent liposuction is still the best and the safest method that can be followed for liposuction. Tumescent liposuction is better than ultrasound assisted liposuction because it does not cause as much damage to tissues as is caused by ultrasound assisted liposuction. Also tumescent liposuction does not cause as much blood loss as caused by the ultrasound method of liposuction.

In addition, tumescent also does not cause as much muscular disruption as ultrasound assisted liposuction does. Ultrasound assisted liposuction is mainly used for removing fats from fibrous areas whereas tumescent liposuction can be safely applied on any body part like thighs, abdomen, neck, face, arms, knees etc. Tumescent liposuction also does not result in burns as opposed to ultrasound assisted liposuction.
