Choosing Organic Produce and Natural Meats

By: Art Gib

These days I see so many advertisements about all natural foods and how organic food is so much healthier to eat. What is the difference that makes organic foods a healthier alternative? How much will this choice of going organic affect my lifestyle? I see some natural foods in my local grocery market, but not very many. There are some natural food markets in my city which only sell natural foods. I figured it is about time that I do some research and see what everyone is talking about.

The term organic can mean a number of definitions, but in general organic foods are made without using pesticides or insecticides. However, most people may not know that some organic farmers use fertilizers if they are also organic. In order to have natural meat, the livestock being raised are fed a very healthy diet and they aren't given any growth hormones to increase milk production or animal size.

Studies have shown that the use of certain grown hormones caused increased health problems both in animals and humans. Needless to say, this is a very controversial subject to talk about. There are studies for both sides to rely back on and who is to say which study is the most correct out of all of them?

There is also some controversy about the nutritional benefits natural foods can offer us. There have been various studies which compared natural foods with conventionally grown foods. These studies were to prove which food choice tasted better and which had more antioxidants. I read about two different studies and in both the winner proved to be natural foods.

The organic fruit and vegetables showed up to forty percent more antioxidants compared to the regularly produced foods and one study showed the organic foods to taste better. This sounds great, right? However, I did read about another study which found no proof that organic foods produced more nutritional value or better taste than regular foods. So again I am left wondering which study to believe.

One problem some consumers have when purchasing natural foods is that they tend to be more expensive than other mass produced foods. The amount of organic food produced is much smaller than the conventionally produced foods, but the overall price difference varies greatly from area to area.

The type of food and shipping method will greatly influence the price. Incredibly, this higher price has not stopped or even slowed the sales growth rate of organic products. Total natural food sales in the world nearly doubled to reach forty billion in 2006. This growth rate is said to continually increase over the next few years as well.

Now you have this information, will you choose to purchase natural food? Do you want to spend the extra money to know that you are eating natural meat? Is it worth it to shop at a different store to get all organic fruits and vegetables? If only all the studies were on the same side of this issue, then I would be able to make up my mind a little easier.
